‘Guinea Pig Kids’ – Black children in care
29 November 2004

A disturbing BBC 2 documentary reveals a terrible scandal involving enforced medical trials on black HIV positive children in New York.

The American national anthem proudly states that it is the ‘land of the free’, and while this may be true for most; it certainly is not the case if you happen to be a black HIV positive child in care.

The television programme ‘Guinea Pig Kids’ refers to the sickening plight of thousands of innocent African American children in New York, whose only crime is to have contracted the HIV virus.

Pharmaceutical companies, including the British based GlaxoSmithKline have been involved in a series of controversial drug trials, testing a deadly cocktail of supposedly anti-AIDS medicines on children, some as young as 3 months old.

The problem with these drugs, such as AZT, is they have serious side effects ranging from debilitating skin diseases to muscle wasting, organ failure and even death.

As well as the frightening reality of this suffering, there is little if any evidence that the drugs work at all. In fact, when carers stopped giving the children this medication their health improved dramatically.

No escape

The programme reveals that the powerful Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) forces the parents or foster parents of these children to participate in these trials – without the option of withdrawing.

The grandmother of Garfield, one of the children in the programme stopped giving him the drugs when she realised they were having a negative effect on his health.

Once the ACS learnt of this, he was removed and placed with a foster mother with a drink problem who lives in a rough neighbourhood. She receives $2000 per month to look after him, because she is prepared to give him the medication.

The National Institute of Health said participation in drug trials can only be done with the consent of a parent, who is free to withdraw their child at any time.

However, for these children in care, the ACS is their ‘parent’ and is supposed to act in their best interests. The quality of their ‘care’ leaves a lot to be desired.

Immoral financial gains

The documentary reveals that the selection panel which decides who is eligible to participate in the trials is made up of doctors from hospitals who are involved in the testing programmes.

The reality of this is repulsively simple – the more children enrolled for testing, the higher the financial rewards for the medical centres involved.

Sadly, the awful truth of this situation is that children, vulnerable members of society are being legally abused in this way in the richest nation in the world.

It beggars belief that a ‘civilised’ country inflicts this needless torture on children of the same ilk as Hitler’s eugenics programme.

• Guinea Pig Kids will be shown on 30th November 2004 on BBC 2 at 7:30pm.
